During the “A Heart for Care” youth tour, a museum guide will lead your class through the Museum Sint-Janshospitaal (Museum St John’s Hospital) — a place where care has been central for nine centuries. This interactive tour invites students aged 14 and up to reflect on universal themes such as care and empathy. Along the way, they’ll explore stunning historical and contemporary artworks, including the world-famous Memling Collection.
Together with the museum guide, students travel back in time to the medieval hospital. They’ll discover healthcare in the 12th century and explore what care and compassion meant in medieval times. From there, the tour shifts focus to the present, challenging students to reflect on what care, empathy, and hospitality mean today for themselves and society. By reflecting on familiar values and current issues, students can find new, personal meanings in centuries-old art and heritage objects.
This guided tour encourages critical thinking and personal expression. Through engaging activities, students will reflect on and debate themes like care, hospitality, empathy, compassion, farewell, and spirituality — major themes that connect closely to teenagers’ lives.
Due to its universal themes, the tour aligns well with subjects in secondary education, such as ethics, religious studies, (art) history, cultural studies, or social sciences. It is also suitable for cross-disciplinary cultural projects and school excursions.
Together, we will ensure that your group visit is a comfortable and trouble-free experience.
