Climb the 366 steps of the Belfry tower. Perhaps you can see your house or garden! On the way to the top, take a breather in the old city treasury, where the city’s charters, seals and coffers were kept during the Middle Ages. At the next level, you can inspect the impressive music drum that operates the tower’s carillon of bells and also the room with the keyboard that allows the carillonneur to play the bells. Will you make it all the way to the top? There is only one way to find out: give it a try! Admittance to the Belfry is free for children aged 6 years or less.

A visit to the Sint-Janshuis Mill is also ideal for a family trip and can easily be worked into a day out in Bruges. The miller will be delighted to explain the ins and outs of his mill, which is still in perfect working order. Nearby , you can also visit the Volkskundemuseum and/or the Gezelle House. They are both within walking distance of the mill, a walk that will take you through one of the greenest and most authentic neighbourhoods in Bruges.
