The Flemish research centre plays an important role in the academic and professional training of young art historians with a strong interest in art in the Burgundian Netherlands.
I think the MBRS was a fantastic experience that enriched my knowledge. It added a lot to my training as an art historian. It was great to gather a group of students from all over the world and make them discuss and compare ideas.
Since 2014-15, the research centre has organised the Musea Brugge Research School. The MBRS offers art history students a unique opportunity by immersing them intensively for a short period in the research area of the Flemish primitives and also bringing them into contact with students and lecturers from other universities at national and international level to help build up long-term networks. The MBRS motivates participating students to study the 15th and 16th century collections from the Musea Brugge in more depth.
The MBRS comprises two sets of three meetings in Bruges, the first three in October or November and the second three in February or March of the following year. The MBRS brings together 12 selected art history students (from BA or MA level) and offers two sets of full and in-depth programmes of lectures, seminars, gallery visits, and experiences behind the scenes of the museum with visiting lecturers from various universities and curators from Musea Brugge. A specialist in the field is invited to attend and supplement the entire MBRS as a moderator. In previous editions Bernhard Ridderbos (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen), Paula Nuttall (Courtauld Institute, London) and Dagmar Eichberger (Universität Heidelberg) have reinforced the MBRS.
The aim during these intensive days is to consider in depth the collection of 15th and 16th century works of Musea Brugge. English is the working language of the MBRS. The programme (including meals) is free, but students make their own arrangements to travel to Bruges.
In the previous three editions we have welcomed students from Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Poland, Italy, Great Britain, Switzerland, Russia, and the USA.
