The toppers in this edition are Mimi Plumb (US), John Divola (US), Bert Danckaert (BE), Paul D’Haese (BE) and the Bruges photographer Jean Godecharle.
In the Gezellehuis, four of the photographers seek to connect with the silence and nature that surrounds us. In the work of Isabel Devos, Christine Lefebvre, Kurt Stockman and Franky Verdickt, the poetry is 'audible'.
-Isabel Devos focuses on man-made structures and the traces that nature leaves on them. She does this in images that have a striking similarity to landscape paintings.
-Christine Levebvre reflects on time and the scars it leaves. She searches in nature and on human skin for the essence of beauty as it is conceived in both western and non-western ideals.
-Kurt Stockman's images hark back to the romanticised depiction of landscapes that started to appear at the beginning of the 19th century, amongst others in the work of Caspar David Friedrich.
-Franky Verdickt, inspired by Henry David Thoreau's 'Walden', seeks to discover 'Atopia'. The desire to flee to a place of boundless wonder, as a brief refuge from a world that constantly forces itself upon us.
