7 April 2020 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of the composer Joseph Ryelandt. He was born, worked and died in Bruges, but his music has a resonance far beyond our narrow city limits. Today, he is regarded as one of the most important composers of the Belgian fin-de-siècle.

Ryelandt wrote religious oratoria, symphonies, songs and intimate chamber music. As a composer and later as director of the Municipal Academy for Music, he spent his whole life in his native city, which he loved dearly. His contacts with other composers, writers and music publishers were varied and wide ranging. Yet notwithstanding his busy musical activities, Ryelandt was also a true family man. He enjoyed life with his large family in their impressive mansion in Bruges and their country house in the Ardennes.

The rich Ryelandt family archive, which was recently donated to the Bruges City Archive, sketches all these different aspect of the composer's life in words, notes and images. These documents, which now form the basis for an exhibition about Jospeh Ryelandt, are supplemented with some of his personal possession and other musical objects. Together they offer us interesting insights into the world of this much underrated musical genius.
