Bruges Department for Conservation and Heritage (Erfgoedcel Brugge)

Bruges Department for Conservation and Heritage provides assistance and support to anyone wishing to renovate or develop lesser-known tangible and intangible heritage in Bruges and the surrounding region. Flanders currently has 22 cultural heritage units. Since 2001, Bruges Department for Conservation and Heritage has been implementing the cultural heritage covenant, that the City of Bruges signed with the Government of Flanders. Heritage units foster collaboration, based on the conviction that local and regional cultural heritage can be made accessible for a wide range of target groups, using the right approach.

The unit’s operation is based on a three-track approach:

Information

• Share heritage-related information with all the stakeholders in the Bruges region.

• Act as an intermediary in contacts with specialised heritage organisations.

• Help communicate local heritage activities and events.

Support

• Coordinate heritage projects and processes.

• Offer coaching to heritage organisations for specific projects or help them develop their structural heritage operations.

• Organise the annual Heritage Day and assist participants with the development of their activities.

Collaboration

• Connect stakeholders with similar ambitions and interests.

• Share knowledge with other heritage units and with professional heritage organisations.

• Share acquired insights with the local and regional heritage network.
