De lithografie toont het graf van Rubens in de Sint-Jacobskerk te Antwerpen. Boven zijn graf prijkt een beeld van Maria van de hand van zijn leerling Lucas Faydherbe. Maria's hart is met een zwaard doorboord. Dit verwijst naar de naam van de kapel: kapel van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Smarten. Boven het altaar van zijn grafkapel hangt een werk van Rubens zijn eigen hand: Madonna omringd door heiligen. Een groot gordijn hangt rechts in de voorstelling. Enkele mensen brengen een eerbetoon aan het graf en lezen het grafschrift.
