How do you move an entire museum library?
On the new museum site at Garenmarkt, we are not only building the BRUSK exhibition hall, but also the BRON knowledge centre, where our museum library will be given a prominent place. Just as we are preparing the move of our collections, we are now also preparing the relocation of the museum library. Fortunately, during the Covid-19 pandemic, we were already able to get an enormous amount of work done when we temporarily moved the library. Now we’re reaping the benefits. Looking for a temporary home
It’s February 2020. We didn’t realise it at the time, but Covid-19 was right around the corner. We were already working hard on the plans for BRUSK and BRON. The new museum site represented a huge step forward for our collection management and public activities. The old buildings on the site would be demolished to make way for BRUSK, but back then, those buildings still housed our museum library, including the reading room, workspaces, and 200 cabinets containing more than 1,400 linear metres of books and journals.
Op zoek naar een tijdelijke plek
Het is februari 2020. We weten het zelf nog niet, maar covid-19 staat voor de deur. Op dat moment zijn we al volop bezig met de plannen voor BRUSK en BRON. De nieuwe museumsite betekent een gigantische stap voorwaarts voor onze collectie- en publiekswerking. De oude gebouwen op de site worden afgebroken om plaats te maken voor BRUSK. Maar die gebouwen geven op dat moment nog onderdak aan onze museumbibliotheek met leeszaal, werkplekken en 200 kasten met ruim 1.400 lopende meter boeken en tijdschriften.
Time, then, to find a location where we could temporarily house our extensive library collection while awaiting the opening of BRON. It felt like an impossible task… Luckily, thanks to an internal move within the City of Bruges, a space became available at Oostmeers 17. There, the museum library was given a temporary reading room, space for the librarian’s desk, and 30 cabinets for the basic collection; 12.5% of the entire collection. The remaining books and journals were placed in a temporary library depot at the Major Seminary. The museum library temporarily switched to a depot-based operation, so the public was no longer able to browse the shelves themselves, and our librarian Björn prepared requested works on demand.
Tijd dus om op zoek te gaan naar een locatie om onze grote bibliotheekcollectie tijdelijk onder te brengen in afwachting van de opening van BRON. Het lijkt een onmogelijke opdracht… Gelukkig komt er dankzij een interne verhuis binnen Stad Brugge een ruimte vrij in Oostmeers 17. Daar krijgt de museumbibliotheek een tijdelijke leeszaal, met plaats voor de werkplek van de bibliothecaris en 30 kasten basiscollectie, goed voor 12,5% van de volledige collectie. De overige boeken en tijdschriften krijgen een plek in een tijdelijk bibliotheekdepot in het Grootseminarie. De museumbibliotheek schakelt dus tijdelijk over naar een depotwerking. Dat betekent dat het grote publiek niet langer zelf aan de boeken kan en dat onze bibliothecaris Björn op aanvraag werken klaarlegt.
Een eerste keer verhuizen in 2020
Zo’n depotwerking is alleen mogelijk met een stevige voorbereiding. Om de nieuwe bibliotheekwerking vlot te laten verlopen, is het belangrijk dat we alle werken in de collectie registreren vooraleer we ze verhuizen. We moeten immers altijd exact kunnen weten welk boek zich in welke doos of kast bevindt. Op dat moment was nog maar 30% van de bibliotheekcollectie geregistreerd en raadpleegbaar in de online catalogus. We hadden dus nog heel wat werk.
Ondertussen komt covid-19 aan in België en sluiten onze musea noodgedwongen de deuren. Met de hulp van twee BIS-stagiairs, schakelt de museumbibliotheek in volle coronatijd een versnelling hoger: in zes maanden tijd kunnen we 80% van de bibliotheekcollectie registreren en online raadpleegbaar maken. Doordat onze locaties gesloten zijn, kunnen we ook rekenen op de hulp van onze museumassistenten om de registreerde boeken in dozen te verpakken om naar het depot te verhuizen. In totaal vullen we een paar duizend dozen met boeken en tijdschriften. Na de intensieve verhuisvoorbereiding en tientallen ritten met dozen vol boeken, heeft onze museumcollectie eindelijk een nieuwe plek en is de verhuisstress gaan liggen. Of toch voor even...
Moving for the first time in 2020
A depot operation like this is only possible following thorough preparation. To ensure the new library operations run smoothly, it is essential that every work in the collection is registered before we move it. We must always be able to pinpoint exactly which book is in which box or cabinet. At that time, only 30% of the library collection had been registered and was searchable in the online catalogue. We still had a great deal of work ahead of us.
Uitkijken naar onze nieuwe museumbibliotheek in 2025
Half 2025 openen we onze nieuwe museumbibliotheek in BRON, met een ruime leeszaal, overlegruimten, zithoeken, stiltebureaus en brainstormhubs. Dan begint de hele verhuisbeweging opnieuw. Gelukkig kunnen we dan de vruchten plukken van ons registratiewerk tijdens de lockdown van 2020. Én kunnen we uitkijken naar een splinternieuwe, comfortabele museumbibliotheek in het hart van het nieuwe Brugse Museumkwartier.
Meanwhile, Covid-19 reached Belgium and our museums were forced to close their doors. With the help of two BIS interns, the museum library shifted into a higher gear during full lockdown: within six months, we managed to register 80% of the library collection and make it accessible online. Because our sites were closed, we could also rely on our museum assistants to help pack the registered books into boxes and transfer them to the depot. In total, we filled several thousand boxes with books and journals. After the intensive preparations and dozens of trips transporting box after box, our library collection finally found a new temporary home and the stress of moving eased. BRON?
BRON is een belangrijk onderdeel van onze nieuwe museumsite. Het kenniscentrum wordt de uitgelezen plek voor onderzoek naar onze rijke collecties, een kennishub voor experts, gidsen, studenten, medewerkers en geïnteresseerde bezoekers. In BRON vind je naast de museumbibliotheek onder meer de kantoren van onze collectie-afdeling en een consultatieruimte voor het Prentenkabinet.
Looking forward to our new museum library in 2025
In mid-2025, we will open our new museum library in BRON, complete with a spacious reading room, meeting areas, seating areas, quiet workspaces and brainstorming hubs. Then the whole moving process will begin all over again. Fortunately, we’ll be able to build on all the registration work we accomplished during the 2020 lockdown. And we can look forward to a brand-new, comfortable museum library at the heart of the new Bruges Museum Quarter.
BRON?
BRON is an important part of our new museum site. The knowledge centre will be the perfect place for research into our rich collections, a knowledge hub for experts, guides, students, staff and interested visitors. In addition to the museum library, BRON also houses the offices of our collections department and a consultation room for the Print Room.
