Research to Memling in Museum Sint-Janshospitaal (2023)

Although Hans Memling is one of the most famous Flemish primitives and many of his works have been preserved, little is actually known about his work and life. Together with the KIK-IRPA and with the support of Flanders, we are conducting in-depth research into the 9 works from the Bruges Memling Collection, the second largest Memling collection in the world, over the next few years.

Over the next few weeks the research team will create new technical images of the 'Moreel Triptych' and 'Annunciation' from the Groeninge Museum in Room 6. Using a high-resolution digital camera and infrared reflectography recordings, we will expose the different layers of the paintings. This will give us more information about the condition of the work, the artist's working methods, and any modifications. The research brings us one step closer to the secrets of the Flemish master.

Collection research is essential to our museum operations but often remains invisible to the public. In the coming weeks, you can see our researchers live at work in the museum and get a unique glimpse of our work behind the scenes. So be sure to drop by.

During the research, the artworks in room 6 are temporarily unavailable for viewing and the room is not accessible. You can watch our researchers in action from the adjacent room.
