The reliquary of Saint Ursula: an utensil?

Today, the reliquary of Saint Ursula stands glittering in a display case at the Museum Saint John's Hospital. But people used to look at the shrine completely differently. In the Middle Ages, the beautiful Ursula shrine was an utensil, a chest with valuable contents. What did the shrine preserve? And why was Saint Ursula so important to the hospital?
