Mass of Saint Gregory

Story
Listen

In the late 15th century, heated controversy arose over the doctrine of transubstantiation, the Catholic belief that during the Eucharist the bread and the wine ‘transform' into the body and blood of Christ. This sparked a wide range of depictions of the Mass of Saint Gregory. The Groeningemuseum holds one such painting, which portrays Pope Gregory’s mass in detail.
