Astrid Decruyenaere

Preventive Conservator

Astrid graduated with a Masters degree in Conservation and Restoration from the University of Antwerp, specialising in stained glass and ceramics restoration. She then worked for several years as a preventive conservation restorer in the private sector, primarily working on collection relocation projects. She specialises in all aspects of preventive conservation, in both museum locations and depots.

Preventive conservation

Preventive conservation revolves around managing the conditions in which the collection is kept as effectively as possible, so that it remains in good condition for as long as possible. Together with the conservation team, Astrid performs a wide range of tasks. These include monitoring parameters such as temperature, humidity and light; organising collection maintenance rounds in the exhibition space; dusting; treatments against mould and harmful insects; condition checks; and minor cleaning or treatments. Contingency planning and providing advice on safe transport and packaging are also part of her duties.

Stained glass

It was during her studies in restoration at the University of Antwerp that Astrid became fascinated by stained glass. After completing a three-year evening course in glassmaking, she embarked on a master-apprentice programme with a master glassmaker in Bruges in 2022. Over the course of two years, Astrid immersed herself completely in the glazier's craft as an apprentice. Since 2024, she has taught on the evening course for art glaziers in Bruges. She specialises in historical techniques and materials.
