Reliekschrijn van de Heilige Ursula

This is a Flemish Masterpiece

Manufacturer

Hans Memling (schilder)

Period and date

15de eeuw
(1482 - 1489)

This well-known, very rare reliquary was made especially for St John's Hospital and contained relics of several saints, including that of St. Ursula. The legend of Ursula on the shrine reads like a comic book anno 1489. Full of colour, light and gold, it is a feast for the eyes. The shrine is a combination of architecture, sculpture and painting. Only on religious holidays, such as Ursula's name day on 21 October, was the shrine brought out or carried along in a procession.
