MASTERPIECE

Roelant Savery's teacher and brother, Jacob Savery, was an important follower of the pen technique of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Jacob even managed to sell imitations of Bruegel's drawings as genuine creations by the master's hand. In this drawing by Roelant, we can also see his admiration for Bruegel's drawing style. One example is the line work. The thickness and intensity of the lines decrease as they disappear into the background. This way, depth is created in the landscape.
