The next tactile element is a replica of a chimney-cheek. This replica allows you to discover the craftsmanship of the stonemason up close. On the wall there are several real chimney-cheeks, but we are going to concentrate on the replica, which you can touch.
The chimney-cheek is the stone element that is placed on the base. Our tactile exploration of this piece focuses on the front of the tactile element, where a male figure has been carved out of the stone. If you start at the top of the figure you can feel that the stone starts to acquire more structure as you move downwards. This structure is a turban the man is wearing on his head. A little lower this headpiece makes way for the man's smooth forehead.
On each side of the forehead we find small tufts of hair. In between you can feel the eyebrows and eyes. The man's eyes are open, you can tell from the eyelids. But the sculptor has not detailed the eyes. They are two fairly smooth spheres. Under the eyes, on the side of the face you can feel the man's cheekbones with the nose in the middle of the face. However, there is something odd here! The nose has crumbled away and you can feel the rough stone.
Under the man's nose and cheeks you can feel his moustache and beard. The man has a striking mouth with a bottom lip that protrudes a little. The corners of the mouth are pointing upwards, as if he is smiling.
If you move back up from the bottom of the beard a little further and to the side, you can feel the man's shoulders. Do you notice anything special when you follow the line of his arms down from one of his shoulders? That's right, the man is not holding his hands in the middle, in front of his body, but slightly to the side, on your right.
The figure ends rather abruptly, as if the man is squatting down. Lastly, we point out the folds in his clothing. It's like he is wearing a flowing robe.
A chimney-cheek like this one was always one of a pair, one for each side of the fireplace. The chimney-cheeks supported the mantelpiece. In this room there are several chimney-cheeks and other architectural elements on display.
The next element you can explore corresponds to number 18 in the audio guide. But before that comes number 16. To continue with the next numbers move on to room 7, right behind you. The tactile element is located more or less in the centre of the wall on your right.
