20 January 2023

The masterpiece by Hugo van der Goes will travel to Berlin and Antwerp for two prestigious exhibitions after the successful 'Face to face with Death' exhibition, with a brief stopover at our Groeninge Museum in the summer. At the end of February 2024, the work permanently returns to Bruges where you can admire it again at its new permanent home in the Groeninge Museum.

Tens of thousands of visitors from Belgium and abroad visited St John's Hospital in recent months, where at the centre of the museum, one work immediately drew attention: 'The Death of the Virgin'. After years of intensive restoration, the work shone like never before in the focus exhibition 'Face to face with Death'. The death scene grabs you by the throat, the emotions of the apostles reveal intense grief and confusion and leave no one unmoved, the colours and light are masterfully rendered. This is a work by one of the greatest Flemish primitives. An absolute masterpiece from our collection.

Two prestigious exhibitions

It should come as no surprise that this painting will appear in two other prestigious exhibitions in Berlin and Antwerp in the coming year. A great opportunity for the painting to reach an even wider audience.

After the exhibition at St John's Hospital, the masterpiece will travel on to Berlin, where it will be part of the retrospective exhibition 'Hugo van der Goes. Zwischen Schmerz und Seligkeit' at the Gemäldegalerie.

During the summer months, between mid-July and early October 2023, 'The Death of the Virgin' will again be on display at the Groeninge Museum in Bruges.

Afterwards, the masterpiece will leave for Antwerp for the masterpiece exhibition 'Rare and Indispensable. 100 Masterpieces from Flemish collections' at the MAS from the end of October 2023 until the end of February 2024.

From late February/early March, 'The Death of the Virgin' will once again shine in its permanent place in the Groeninge Museum, alongside works by other masters such as Jan Van Eyck and Hans Memling from our permanent collection.
