On 17 October 2022, ‘The Last Judgement’ by Hieronymus Bosch (ca. 1500) will be removed from the hall where it is normally on display and made ready for a journey to Italy. Until the spring, this masterpiece will be one of the undoubted highlights in the exhibition ‘Hieronymus Bosch. One another Renaissance’ in Milan.
Musea Brugge is the proud owner of a superb and important collection of art and heritage artefacts that are highly appreciated and studied throughout the world. Because of their importance, items from our collection regular form the focus and anchor point for art-historical studies, which are subsequently presented to the world in ground-breaking exhibitions.
On 9 November, the exhibition 'Hieronymus Bosch. One another Renaissance’ will open in the Palazzo Real in Milan. This exhibition will explore the role played by Bosch in the so-called 'anti-renaissance', which reached its high-water mark in Europe in the years around 1500.
On 17 October 2022, ‘The Last Judgement’ will be taken down and its condition inspected, prior to its preparation and packaging for transportation. At the end of March/beginning of April, the painting will be returned to Bruges, where it can once again be admired in its permanent home in hall 3 of the Groeningemuseum.
