Secret-Reflet (Secret-Reflection), Fernand Khnopff

1902

Highlights Groeningemuseum_Secret-Reflet_Fernand-Khnopff-c-Hugo-Maertens

The woman elegantly shuts the mouth of the mask. What is said is not important; what is concealed most certainly is. The secret must not be disclosed. Fernand Khnopff has used pastel to sketch the woman in the image of his favourite model, his sister Marguerite, his muse, angel, or priestess. Underneath he sketches in pencil the melancholic reflection of the centuries old St John’s Hospital in Bruges. The city where he grew up made an indelible impression on him and often appears in his works. The gilded frame designed by the artist gives this mysterious work a certain unity.
