Tombs of Charles the Bold and Mary of Burgundy

Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk, 16th century

In the church chancel you can gaze on the richly adorned tombs of the Burgundian rulers Mary of Burgundy and her father Charles the Bold. Mary of Burgundy died tragically in 1482 at a very young age after falling from her horse. Early in the 16th century, the heart of her son Philip the Fair was also laid to rest in the same tomb. A similar monument was later erected for her father Charles the Bold. The two realistic copper figures give a genuine impression of the rulers’ appearances. In front of the tombs we can also see the medieval painted sepulchres.
