Pipe clay patacon, with a presentation of the bowls game

second half of the 19th century

Highlights Volkskunde patacon

Many cultures decorate bread for festive events. ‘Patacons’ are earthenware discs which bakers used at Christmas and New Year to adorn raisin bread. They are painted with colourful scenes. ‘Patacons’ with Santa Claus and Black Piet figures are even more recent. A ‘patacon’ was a Spanish coin from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The name is probably derived from the coin, but we are not entirely sure.
