1270-1280
This is one of the oldest preserved sculptures in Bruges. It dates from 1270-80 and displays very early and large-scale Mary worship. Originally, the image was polychromed. It was certainly visible from outside and was secured behind bars. Mary worship reached a climax in 1499 when Our Lady performed her first miracle. The many miracles which followed can be seen on the wall carpets and stained glass windows in the church and in the miracle book.
