With a broad gesture, Christ separates good and evil for all eternity. On the left at the bottom, angels accompany the blessed to heaven. On the right at the bottom, devils consign the damned to hell where chaos and panic prevail. A man climbs with one leg out of the grave, and a skeleton-like figure gazes at you eerily. For this innovative composition, Pourbus drew inspiration from Michelangelo’s world famous fresco in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Thorough preparation went into this painting in advance. That is shown by the preliminary sketch which appears in various places on the panel.
