Jean Brusselmans drew inspiration from his immediate surrounds. His wife Marie is sitting at the table. She grabs our attention at once with her black and white check dress. On the table we can see a bust, which is inspired by Michelangelo’s Dying Slave. The colours are striking, the composition nicely balanced. With no frills and with well thought out clear lines, he shares this intimate domestic scene. Brusselmans’ individual work can hardly be accommodated in the trends of the early twentieth century.
