about 1502-1508
In a splendid landscape which runs across three panels Jesus is baptised by John the Baptist. Directly above Christ we see the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, and God the Father. Together they form the Holy Trinity. In the background you see fragments from the life of John the Baptist. The side panels depict the clients: Jan de Trompes and his first wife Elisabeth, together with their children and patron saints. His second wife is also depicted on the rear side of the side panels. Note the highly refined flowers on the landscape. These purifying plants symbolise the purifying aspect of baptism.
