Hospital wards in the Middle Ages had little altars and chapels scattered here and there where people could pray to a saint for healing. The chapel of St Cornelius with the 13th century image is the only one which remains. In the past, all images were brightly painted, just like this one. Believers came to the chapel to ask the saint to protect their unborn children from children’s diseases and epilepsy.
