This death scene is highly gripping. In the middle we see Mary, mother of Jesus, on her deathbed. The 12 apostles have gathered around her humbly. Deep sorrow is written all over their faces. Hugo van der Goes depicts this masterfully. In the foreground John the Evangelist is looking at you. Peter, arrayed in priestly robes, administers the last rites to Mary. Christ appears above them amongst angels, bathing in a supernatural divine light. The wounds on his hands show that he is the Redeemer.
