Tapestry 'Old Age or the wolf' from the series by Gombaut and Macée

17th century

Bruges was a major centre for the production of tapestries from the 14th century onwards. In the 17th century, Bruges workshops were renowned for their splendid artistic and technical creations. A top hit was the series about the shepherd couple Gombaut and Macée. The life of a shepherd was a very popular theme from the end of the 15th century onwards. Stories were full of erotic innuendo and ambiguities. The texts on the carpets give them the allure of a modern comic strip story.
