The River Leie at Astene (The Thistles), Emile Claus

Highlights Groeningemuseum_De-Leie-in-Astene_Emile-Claus-c-Hugo-Maertens

It is high summer on the River Leie. The sunlight is from the south. In several shades of green Emile Claus gives his interpretation of the landscape. With bright and pure colours and single touches, he sets out a world which, as it were, comes to life. You can almost hear the rustling of the fuzzy thistles. In the background we see a typical Flemish white farmhouse. Claus lived on the banks of the river. The rural life there was one of his favourite themes. He was one of the figureheads of ‘luminism’, the Belgian variant of French impressionism.
