Aroma installation in the Sint-Janshospitaal: the aroma of the 18th century
The Sint-Janshospitaal (St John’s Hospital) pharmacy radiates not only a genuinely authentic atmosphere, but also a very special aroma. In honour of ‘Sister pharmacist’ Eleonora Verbeke, who lived in the eighteenth century, workers have developed a brand new aroma based on the formula book. Sadly, there are no longer any portraits of this ‘great lady’, but we can give you an idea of what she could smell as she stirred her mortars and pans centuries ago. From now on, we are highlighting one herb each month which you will find in the flowerbeds in front of the museum. For our youngest visitors there is a fun treasure hunt.
You can also view Sister Verbeke’s formula book online.
