Hilarious, macabre, lyrical. 75 years after his death, Musea Brugge is launching an ode to the grand master from Ostend. This collection presentation brings Ensor's colourful but harsh view of the world to life with some thirty works on paper.
In honour of the pioneer of Belgian modernism we have made a selection of Ensor's work on paper from our own collection. The exhibited drawings and etchings reveal his unprecedented graphical talent.
Ensor was an innovator. His work is dotted with satire, non-conformist humour and criticism. From his typical self-portraits and grotesque, macabre scenes right through to his beloved masks and skeletons. 75 years after his death, Ensor's work still feels cutting edge.
For the very first time, in the collection presentation, you can now admire the recently acquired print ‘The Seven Capital Sins dominated by Death’. This coloured etching was used on the front page of the satirical album ‘Les Péchés capitaux’ (The Capital Sins). The work is accompanied by the other etched capital sins from the album. The painting ‘Icon. Portrait of Eugène Demolder’ by Ensor is also part of the collection presentation.
